Renovation in progress
Spring has come to Kerrville bringing hail, high winds, and even higher temperatures. At 529 Water Street, there is a flurry of activity as crews work their magic to turn the A. C. and Myrta Schreiner house into the Heart of the Hills Heritage Center.
How do you turn a historic residence into a public museum? That is a simple question with a very complex answer: it takes many, many skilled specialists like architects, contractors, plumbers, electricians, etc.
To get the house ready for its new life, the vintage electricity must be updated, the floors and structures retrofitted, the plumbing expanded to handle crowds, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliances met - (have you noticed the elevator shaft on the southern side of the building?) And that is just the start.
Throughout the transformation, special care is taken to respect the integrity and history of the house. Both inside and out.
Even the mature trees have been protectively wrapped.
There is so much to do as the Heart of the Hills Heritage Center gets ready for its big debut, so stay tuned for more updates.
