Toni Romero Box
Board of Directors, Representing KCHC
Toni Romero Box is a fourth generation Kerrvillian who is proud of her family’s heritage and ongoing service within the community. Her great-grandmother started the family business, Torres Foods Tortilla Factory, known for serving hand prepared from scratch, authentic Mexican food. The family owned and operated restaurants that served Kerrville residents and visitors for 74 years became synonymous with a longstanding tradition of quality. Through their food business, the Torres family also served the community at large through schools, camps, and the VA Hospital, sponsored fundraising events for the Red Cross and Kerrville Lions Club, and promoted food, culture, and entertainment by San Antonio musicians and dancers through special events such as “A Night in Old Mexico.” The Torres family took part in community and patriotic celebrations, parades, and festivals that promoted unity during a time of segregation. Knowledge of local history has instilled in Toni a sense of pride in having grown up in this community.
Toni’s creativity fueled her success in a professional career, first working for Frost Bros., the high-end San Antonio based specialty store. Her enjoyment and experience working with jewelry opened the door to employment with Monet Jewelers, Ciani, precious metal division, and the promotion and placement of Monet’s collaborative fashion line with designer YSL. Toni grew to love the many facets of her position that included working with accounts, in-store training, merchandising, customer relations, planning and hosting special events, and New York markets and training.
Toni met her husband, Michael, while working in Houston in 1980 and they have been married for 38 years. She assisted him in his long career in the furniture business. After raising their family in Houston, they moved back to the Hill Country to enjoy the beauty and peaceful lifestyle of the area. She is a member of the Kerr County Historical Commission, and has volunteered with Peterson Pathways, Hospice, and the children’s bereavement program known as Bridging the Gap.
Toni is passionate about preserving stories of the community’s people and history for new generations to appreciate and be inspired for years to come.
